Okapi was created with a view of being one of Africa’s first true luxury brands. Founded in 2008 by South African painter, Hanneli Rupert, Okapi sees locally manufactured product ranges that combine exceptional quality and craftsmanship with an international yet uniquely African look and feel.

Named after the elusive antelope, also known as the African Unicorn, the Okapi was discovered at the turn of the century in the anthropological era of African exploration.

The brand takes influence from an Art Nouveau aesthetic, magic, mysticism and reverence to nature. This design code comes to life through products that are both understated and timeless with form following function, as well as unique and exotic with eye catching details such as the Springbok horns.

Locally Made Artisanal Luxury

At Okapi we manufacture everything locally with carefully selected partners. We have fostered close relationships with everyone in our production line from beginning to end. This includes amongst others the original Ostrich farming families from Oudtshoorn, the co-operatively run tannery with whom we developed our signature Blesbok leather, conservationists, veterinarians, fourth generation leather craftsmen, game-rangers and film makers as well as the artisanal metal workers with whom we hand-make all of our hardware in-house.

It is through this unique network that we can ensure that every element of an Okapi bag entirely is traceable, sustainable and ethically sourced. 100% of the chains, horns, labels, leathers, linings and packaging are made and sourced in South Africa.

As a result of this, we are creating positive change by developing valuable skills and creating sustainable jobs on the continent.
