In partnership with Arctic Adventures of Norway, Asplan Viak, and Skanska, Snøhetta has created the otherworldly Svart, the world’s first Powerhouse hotel. This incredible structure sits at the foot of the Svartisen glacier which runs through the Meløy municipality in northern Norway. To summarise, this beauty is the world’s first Arctic Circle hotel.

The circular body of Svart ranges from the shoreline and into the pristine waters of the Holandsfjorden fjord. The building’s shape affords guests an unrivalled, panoramic view of the fjord and the once-in-a-lifetime experience of living in close proximity with the stunning glacial environment.

“Building in such a precious environment comes with some clear obligations in terms of preserving the natural beauty and the fauna and flora of the site. It was important for us to design a sustainable building that will leave a minimal environmental footprint on this beautiful Northern nature,” says Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Founding Partner, Snøhetta.

Svart Powerhouse Hotel is the only building to be constructed in line with the energy positive Powerhouse standard in a northern climate. The hotel boasts an annual energy consumption that’s approximately 85% lower than a modern hotel. It also produces its own energy – a necessity in this valuable arctic environment.
