The largest flawless heart-shaped diamond in the world was purchased for a remarkable US$14.99 million (S$20.8 million), says auction house Christie’s. This sale goes down as a new record in the category.

Christie’s elaborates that the stunning diamond features superior symmetry and polish, on top of being the largest of its kind. Similarly, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has rated “La Légende” as a Type IIa gem owing to its unequalled purity.

Diamonds rated as Type IIa possess almost no trace elements and are comprised entirely of carbon; these types of diamonds make up a mere 1-2 percent of all natural diamonds. Crafted by jewellery house, Boehmer et Bassenge, the walnut-sized gem was the focal point of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva, even though it barely made it past the pre-sale estimate of US$14 – $$20 million.

“La Legende” weighs a hefty 92.15 carats and is the beautiful centrepiece of a necklace of cultured pearls.
