Graff's Record-Breaking Diamond: The Lesedi La Rona

At 302.37 carats, the Graff Lesedi La Rona is the largest and highest clarity diamond ever certified by the GIA, and the world’s largest square emerald-cut diamond. The magnificent jewel has been meticulously shaped and polished by Graff’s best-in-class team of gemologists and master polishers. This extraordinary wonder required over 18 months of exacting craftsmanship and marks a historic moment in the annals of diamond history and heritage.

Utilising highly sophisticated software that was custom-built to undertake the difficult task of doing the Lesedi La Rona justice, Graff’s gemologists gazed deep into the diamond, mapping out the natural faults within the gem with meticulous precision. Initially, the study of the stone deduced that a 300-carat principal diamond simply wasn’t feasible. Laurence Graff, however, was convinced that it was possible and set about tackling the challenge with a team of specialist gemmologists and highly skilled polishers.

A rough diamond is a natural substance; a complex crystal with subtle idiosyncrasies that must be respected. It needed hundreds of hours of polishing to achieve the mirror-smooth surface of the Graff Lesedi La Rona, a process navigated by Graff’s master craftsmen thanks to their decades upon decades of artisanal skill and expertise.

Upon sending the diamond to the GIA for certification, it was confirmed that Laurence Graff’s challenge had not only been met but surpassed. The Graff Lesedi La Rona weighs a staggering 302.37 carats and is a top D colour, with magnificent clarity and superior polish and symmetry.
